The Seventh Megacities Lecture On 27 November 2003 professor Richard Sennett gave the seventh Megacities
Lecture. Sennett chairs The Cities Programma at the London School of Economics.
He specializes in research on cities, labour and the sociology of culture.
Some major publications: The Fall of Public Man (1977), The Conscience
of the Eye: Urban Design and the Social Life of Cities (1990), Flesh and
Stone: The Body and the City (1994). Respect: The Welfare State, Inequality,
and the City will appear this year. From the Dutch perspective Arnold Reijndorp acted as a co-assessor. He
is an independent researcher on the cutting edge of urban studies and
town planning. Publication 'Megacities and the Welfare State' The publication 'Megacities and the Welfare State' contains crucial chapters
from three recent books by Richard Sennett, followed by the accompanying
paper by Arnold Reijndorp and also a number of short discussions about
respect and social sustainability from authors like Job Cohen, Andrée
van Es, Dirk Kloosterboer, Robert Kloosterman, Peter Noordanus, Janny
