Megacities and the Welfare State
Prof. Richard Sennett


On 27 November 2003 professor Richard Sennett gave the seventh Megacities Lecture. Sennett chairs The Cities Programma at the London School of Economics. He specializes in research on cities, labour and the sociology of culture. Some major publications: The Fall of Public Man (1977), The Conscience of the Eye: Urban Design and the Social Life of Cities (1990), Flesh and Stone: The Body and the City (1994). Respect: The Welfare State, Inequality, and the City will appear this year.

From the Dutch perspective Arnold Reijndorp acted as a co-assessor. He is an independent researcher on the cutting edge of urban studies and town planning.
Mr. Roger van Boxtel, former Minister of Urban and Integration Policy, chaired the evening.
The location of the seventh Megacities Lecture, The ING House, headoffice of the ING Group, at the South-axis in Amsterdam, was provided by ING Real Estate.


Publication 'Megacities and the Welfare State'

The publication 'Megacities and the Welfare State' contains crucial chapters from three recent books by Richard Sennett, followed by the accompanying paper by Arnold Reijndorp and also a number of short discussions about respect and social sustainability from authors like Job Cohen, Andrée van Es, Dirk Kloosterboer, Robert Kloosterman, Peter Noordanus, Janny Rodermond and Ries van der Wouden.
The publication "Megacities and the Welfare State" is available for 10,00 Euro (excluding mailing costs). The invoice will be included with the shipping, unless you give in a separate invoice address.
